[Home]Songs Featuring Gender Or Sexuality Switches

Stephin Merritt: "The Eurythmics had an album, Savage, on which possibly every song was a simple subversion of an existing cliché. [Annie Lennox] sings 'I Need a Man' in the voice of Mick Jagger as he would sing 'I Need a Woman'. Itís unmistakably a male lust song with the genders reversed. It's sexist and demeaning to men. And there's another one, 'Do You Want to Break Up?" instead of 'Do You Want to Go Out with Me?' Also a dance song, 'I love to / Listen to / I love to / Listen to / I love to / Listen to Beethoven.' And her song I Need You goes, 'I need you to break my spine'." Quoted in interview with [Index Magazine], but no longer available online.
